Why I Have Come to Love these Nights Nearing the Winter Solstice

Over our heads
the dark hours
hold even the stars

in their folds. Despite
my joy in the sun,
I fall in love with

this wide time when
the shadows deepen
and we lose whatever

boundaries we have
drawn and redrawn.
It is a time when we

do not need to know
anything except what
we can see, which

is nothing, and all
those long lists
that the light brings

are mislaid. Our story
forgets its beginning,
and the end, my dear,

oh yes, is nowhere
to be seen.
