At the Sky Deck in the Sears Tower

Above us, blue.
And 103 floors below,
the tiny train station
with its long strands
of tracks, and the dark
stripe of river with sky
flashing back, and thousands
of rooftops, tens of thousands
of cars, and two thousand
thousand other lives.
All miracle, every bit of it.
All beyond what we can
explain. Not the tower
with its proud list of facts—
how many floors, how
many guests, how many
thousands of miles
of plumbing. But each
of us walking around
these stories with our inner
secrets, our beautiful dreams,
our loneliness, our terrible
fears that keep us from stepping
too close to what looks like an edge.
